Speed Cleaning | How To Clean Your Entire Home In Less Than Two Hours

speed cleaning.jpg

There's something really satisfying about a clean home. I always find that I'm less stressed, and I can accomplish more goals in a clean, organized environment. This isn't always easy! When you have kids (and a partner that isn't a neat freak), it can feel like you're always picking up after someone else. That's when speed cleaning comes in to play! Over the past two years of having a child, I've begun to master the art of speed cleaning. If you haven't tried this technique before, it's basically cleaning your entire house in way less time than normal. Gone are the days where you spend hours and hours cleaning. Instead, you focus on the most important tasks that need to get done - do them fast. And the rest can wait till later.

Make Speed Cleaning Fun!

Cleaning can be fun if you set yourself up for it. The first step is to go into it with a positive attitude. Know that you're going to spend an hour speed cleaning and commit to it. The result of your actions will make your house feel fresh and organized.

When I was a child, every Saturday morning my mom had her favorite records blasting as she cleaned her way around the house. She got into it. And she had a lot of fun! I remember her singing along to the music, and dancing as she scrubbed the floors. And as a kid, I danced too! I loved this time with my mom. It created such a positive memory for me that I still carry with me to this day. It's one of the main reasons why I've hung on to the tradition of owning a record player and cherishing old albums that mean so much me.

These days I've carried on the tradition - I blast the music - most of which are old records I still love. And I make this time more about having fun than having to do chores. My daughter already has a positive relationship with cleaning - As soon as I tell her that's what we're going to do, she gets right into it.

The last step before you get started is to make sure you're wearing comfy clothes. Nobody wants to feel uncomfortable while they're scrubbing counters (well maybe there are some people who enjoy it but I'm not one of them). I'm a leggings and old t-shirt kind of gal with my hair pulled into a quick messy bun.

Create a Speed Cleaning Kit

Having all your cleaning supplies in one easy-to-access bucket or caddy is the easiest way to stay organized. I like to keep mine high up on a shelf in my laundry room (away from toddler's hands). So that whenever I need it, I can just grab and go. I'm a big fan of natural or organic products. They're attractive looking, better for my family and better for the environment. If you don't have a cleaning kit put together already, this is a list of some of my favorites:

Speed Cleaning Steps - How To Clean Your Entire Home In Less Than An Hour:

  1. First, you'll want to set a timer for one hour - this is a great way to keep you motivated to finish your house as quickly as you can!

  2. Walk around your house with a "clutter" basket and grab any dirty dishes or things that don't belong there (toys, books, clothes, etc). Run the dishes to the kitchen sink and leave the extra stuff in the basket which you'll sort out later. [5 mins]

  3. If your dishwasher is full of clean dishes, empty your dishwasher as quickly as you can. Then add all dirty dishes and start it up. [8 mins]

  4. Hand wash the larger bowls and pots and let air dry. [8 mins]

  5. Remove any clutter that's been piling up on counters and your kitchen table. Place that stuff in your clutter basket. [1 min]

  6. Wipe down any dusty surfaces in the living room. Fluff the pillows, and fold the blankets. [5 mins]

  7. Next, head to the first bathroom. Spray all surfaces with an all-purpose cleaner. Wipe them all down and rinse the rag. [5 mins]

  8. Clean your toilet with toilet bowl cleaner and a scrubber (Save all your mirrors until later). [3 mins]

  9. If you have more bathrooms to clean, repeat steps 7 and 8 in your other bathrooms. [8-10 mins]

  10. Now head to the bedrooms. Change the sheets on each bed if needed, if not then make the bed. Toss all dirty laundry in the hamper. Wipe down any surfaces quickly with a duster or cloth. Repeat this step in all other bedrooms. [10-12 mins each]

  11. Next, starting at one side of the house, vacuum each room. While doing this, bring a damp cloth and all-purpose cleaner with you. Do a quick spot clean of any stains on the floor or walls that need a little extra scrub. [12 mins]

  12. Clean all mirrors and windows in one big batch. Grab your glass cleaner and towels and head around the house and spot clean wherever necessary. [8 mins]

  13. Last but not least, take your clutter basket and empty its contents in their necessary homes. The best way to do this is by going from room to room with it and putting everything back in its proper place. [5 mins]

  14. That's it! You're done! Now you can sit back and relax in your fresh clean space. I like to open a few windows (weather permitting), light a fragrant candle, and add some fresh flowers to my kitchen table to enhance this glorious experience.

Speed Cleaning Tips and Tricks:

  • Set up a few mini speed cleaning routines each day. I know that in my house, cleaning is an ongoing job. If I don't feel like tidying one day, it definitely catches up to me the next day making it much worse! So, I try to find little pockets of time where I clean and tidy. For example, every morning I like to empty the dishwasher while I make my daughter's breakfast. This makes it easier to keep the kitchen clean throughout the day by throwing the dirty stuff right into the dishwasher. Next, in the evening when my husband is giving Lue a bath, I'll do a quick tidy around the house. This usually means putting all her toys in a basket by the couch. And doing a quick spot vacuum. If I spend just 10 minutes a day tidying this makes things SO MUCH EASIER in the long run!

  • When it comes to cleaning, good enough is better than perfect. Your house doesn't need to be completely spotless! I tend to be a little bit of a perfectionist in many areas of life, but once I had my daughter, I realized that I had to start letting this go in order to actually get stuff done!

  • I like to start on one side of my house and work my way to the other. Typically, I start in the kitchen because it usually requires the most work. Next, I'll tidy the living room, bathroom, master bedroom and then upstairs bedrooms which is the basic organic flow of how our house is laid out. You might want to start with the hardest part first or save it until last depending on your preference.

  • Lastly, this steam mop has been a life saver on my hardwood floors! I love that it sanitizes and cleans gunk easily! I'll spot clean with it a few times a week (mostly below the table where my daughter eats) and then do an overall mop once a week as well.

Do you speed clean in your home? This method has helped me feel much more organized! Having a clean house really makes a difference in all areas of my life - I can get more work done, I'm in a better mood, and I can be more present with my daughter.

Do you have any cleaning tips to share that work well for you?
